“Waffles” are in the title of my blog, but that doesn’t mean I write a lot about what I had for breakfast. But I do love waffles. I’m William Foreman, and I love road cycling and cyclocross more, and that’s the blog’s central topic. I’m also interested in the power of place – how it influences our cycling experience. When I started this blog, I was living in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou. The site’s tag line was “Watching China from a bike.” I had great fun describing what it was like riding on Chinese roads. I hope that new readers will check out the archives.
When I returned to the U.S. in June 2010 to do a yearlong fellowship at the University of Michigan, I decided to keep the blog alive, describing the reverse culture shock I felt after being away from the U.S. for more than a decade. I also wanted to describe what it’s like to train through the Michigan winter. My motto became, “It’s never too cold to ride.”
I enjoy racing but as I explore the second half of my 40s, I can’t pretend to be much of a contender anymore – not that I ever was one. I pride myself on being the guy who shows up for every ride – despite the rain, snow or lung-clogging smog – and uses his enthusiasm and dedication to compensate for his declining power and speed. I was an early adopter of carbon, and I’ve got a nice titanium bike, but I enjoy riding my steel frame the most.
